Jesus was sad
Children's sermon
Object:
a sympathy card
Good morning! Today I have a card I sometimes send to
people. It's one card I don't like to send because it means that
someone is very sad. It's called a "sympathy card." Does anyone
know when people send these? (Let them answer.) People send
sympathy cards whenever someone has had a loved one die. When
someone dies, others are sad because they won't get to see that
person like they normally do. That person is not around to laugh
and smile or to eat a meal together or to watch television.
Death usually makes others very sad.
Jesus once had a very good friend. His name was Lazarus. He died. Jesus also became very sad. How do we know that? (Let them answer.) It says that he "began to weep." Jesus missed his friend and was very sorry to see that he had died.
Many people here today have had loved ones die. Some have died just this past year. Today we remember the name of each of the people who died and went to heaven to be with Jesus this past year. Many sympathy cards were sent because of the sadness.
Whenever we are sad, it is good to remember that Jesus understands. Jesus knows exactly what sadness feels like. He was so sad once that he began to cry! His dear friend Lazarus had died!
Sympathy cards are sent to tell others that we know they are sad and because they are sad, we share some of their sadness. That's why sympathy cards are so comforting to people who have lost loved ones. In a way the Bible is like God's sympathy card to people who are sad. The Bible explains that Jesus understands our sadness also.
I'm so glad Jesus understands us -- when we are happy or when we are sad. I'm especially glad that Jesus raised his friend Lazarus from the dead to show that Jesus will raise all of us from the dead to live with him in heaven. That is a wonderful promise and a comforting hope. D
ear Jesus: Thank you for showing us you understand us, and thank you so much for giving us the promise of heaven. Amen.
