John the Baptist
Children's sermon
Object:
a picture of John the Baptist
Good morning! Do you know who this is? (Show the picture and
let them answer.) This is a picture of John the Baptist. They
called him that because that's what he did. He went around the
country of Israel calling the people to repentance and baptizing
them. Do you know what kinds of clothes he wore? (Let them
answer.) He wore a coat of camel's hair, which is not a very nice
material, and he ate bugs and honey. Do you think he would fit in
here in our church with that kind of clothes and that diet? (Let
them answer.) No, I'm sure he wouldn't. He would look out of
place here today.
John looked a little strange to people in his own time too,
but he had a mission from God, and he didn't care what people
thought of his clothes or what he ate. God had given him a job to
do. He was to prepare the way for Jesus. He was telling people
that Jesus was coming and they should get ready by confessing
that they were sinners and by being baptized. Do you think that
was an important job? (Let them answer.) Yes, of course it was,
and he did that job no matter what anybody thought of him.
There was a king named Herod who really didn't like what
John was doing. Does anybody know what this king did to John?
(Let them answer.) King Herod killed John by cutting off his
head. We need to remember that John loved the Lord so much that
he was willing to die for Him. Do we love God that much? Are we
willing to die for Him? (Let them answer.) We may never be put in
a position where we have to die for God, but we are called to be
good witnesses for Him. Let's ask God to give us the courage that
we need to stand up for Him like John the Baptist did.
Dear God: We thank You for giving us people like John the Baptist
as examples for Christians through the centuries. Help us to be
like him when we need to stand up for Jesus. Amen.
