Just trash
Children's sermon
Object:
An overflowing trash can
What do you suppose I should do with this trash can? (Let
them answer.) Usually the contents of my trash can go right to my
garbage bin. I no longer have any use for what is in the trash
can. It is "trash." Sometimes we get so many things that they
just get in the way. That's why I like a neat room. All the
useless things are already thrown away.
I wonder, have any of you cleaned your room lately? (Let them answer.) Did you throw things away? (Let them answer.) I'll bet you did! That's what usually happens when I clean my room or my house. The useless things get thrown away because they are just in the way otherwise.
Paul, the writer of the words we read from Philippians, said that he could brag about all his accomplishments. He did everything right. He was a member of the right groups and organizations. He was born into the right family. He had everything possible to have respect. But he said that all his accomplishments were like trash in a trash can! What do you suppose he meant by that? (Let them answer.)
It was so much more important for him to know the Lord Jesus Christ than anything else. The same is true for us. We could grow up to become a famous football player or a ballet dancer. We could become well-known as a writer or an actor. We could become President of the United States. All these things would be nice, but they don't mean anything as much as knowing our Lord Jesus.
I'm so glad that we have the opportunity to come together here in worship each Sunday and at Sunday school to share the story about Jesus again and again. We want to know Jesus. Nothing is as important as that. No one is more important than Jesus. Compared to Jesus, every human honor is like the trash in this trash can!
Dear God: Thank you for giving us Jesus. Everything else is less important than him and yet you give us so many other things as well. Help us always to value the Lord Jesus. Amen.
