Justified by faith
Children's sermon
Object:
newspaper article about an acquittal (or just talk about
one if none is available)
Good morning! I have here an article from the newspaper
about a person who was on trial for a crime. In a trial like
that, all the evidence is presented, and then a judge or a jury
decides whether the person is guilty or not guilty. The person in
this article was found "not guilty" so he/she was set free. I
don't really know whether he/she was guilty or not, but that
doesn't matter now because in the eyes of the law, he/she has
been declared not guilty and is free. They cannot try him/her
again for that crime. I imagine that person is happy to be free
right now, don't you? (Let them answer.)
Do you know that you and I are also charged with some
crimes, and we also have to face a judge? The crimes we are
guilty of are called sins. We have all sinned and we must face
our judge who is God, Himself. If we were in front of God right
now and charged with sinning, what could we say to Him? Could any
of us say we were not guilty of sinning? (Let them answer.) No,
we couldn't. We are all guilty because we do sin.
But, God has a way of declaring us not guilty, just like the
person in this article was found not guilty. He has told us that
anybody who believes in His Son, Jesus, will be "justified" by
that faith in Jesus. To be justified means to be found not
guilty. So we know that because of our faith, we will be set
free, just like the person in this article was set free. Isn't
that wonderful news? Aren't you glad that God has done this for
us? (Let them answer.)
Let's thank God for the faith that sets us free and allows
us to be found not guilty.
Dear God in Heaven: We thank You so much for giving us faith in
Your Son, Jesus. Because of this faith we are found not guilty
and can live with You in Heaven forever. Amen.
