'Keep alert'
Children's Activity
Object:
Teachers or Parents: As we approach the new millennium we
are hearing false prophets around the world proclaiming the end
of the world. It was so a thousand years ago, as it is now. The
Bible tells us that there is nobody who knows when the end will
come except God Himself. We should reassure our children that
these false prophets are wrong and they should not have any fear.
At the same time, we need to be ready when the Lord does come
back, and being ready means believing in Jesus as our Lord and
Savior. Those who believe are always ready, always alert.
* Play a game where the children need to be alert in order
to win. Give each one of them a secret word such as "Jesus" or
"God" or "Salvation." Give the same word to two or more of the
children, but be sure they don't know who else has the same word.
Explain that you will begin to read to them and if they hear
their secret word read, they are to run to a place and stand
there. The first child to get to the place is the winner. Play
until all the secret words are read and the children have
responded by running to the spot you named. You can give prizes
if you want. After the game is over, discuss with them how those
who won the game were alert to hear their secret word and how we
all need to be alert for the return of Jesus. Explain what it
means to be alert and ready for his return.
* Ask the children to figure out how many days, not counting
today, are left in this century. Put the answer on the board or
an easel and then have them calculate how many hours and minutes
that is. When all that is done, discuss how we can calculate this
information right down to the minute, but none of us know how
much time is left before Jesus returns. You can then discuss how
important it is to be ready for his return whenever it happens.
