THE King!
Children's Activity
Object:
Teachers or Parents: Today is the end of the church year.
It is "Christ The King" Sunday. It is a time for celebrating the
power of our Lord. Of course his power is not in making laws,
leading armies, writing books or music, or in any other way we
normally associate with power. Jesus' power is a spiritual power
-- the most powerful power of all!
* Get a map of the world that shows where your church is sending missionaries or missionary aid to help spread the gospel. Show how evangelism is an important element in proclaiming King Jesus to a world that may not even know him.
* Show all the ways Jesus is not king: He has no political office like the President or Prime Minister. He leads no military or police force. Jesus never wrote a book (not even the Bible). Jesus never wrote music. Jesus was not an artist. Jesus never served as C.E.O. of a large corporation.
* Show how Jesus is king: He saved us from sin, death, and the devil. He rose victorious over death (even the most powerful king in history could not do that). He cured the sick and made the incapacitated capable. He taught a small group of people some simple teachings and they went out to tell others, and the result was a world where millions upon millions of people now know Jesus.
* Utilize the Alpha and Omega imagery from the book of Revelation to contrast our celebration of Jesus as powerful king this Sunday to our observance of Jesus as helpless infant on Christmas.
Sunday school assembly opening:
* Sing "He's Got the Whole World."
* Take up a special offering for global missions.
* If possible, have someone who has been to a mission field lead your opening.
Looking ahead:
* You may want to prepare Advent countdown calendars for your children. Commercial calendars are available for purchase or you can make your own.
* Now is the time to think of your Christmas program. Work at making it on Christmas (or in the Christmas season -- even if it means participation will be limited).
