King of Kings
Children's sermon
Object:
a picture or figures of the three Wise Men
(Show the three Wise Men) Today is the day we talk about the Wise Men. They were three visitors who traveled a long way to find Jesus. Some think that they were kings, but I don't know. There's no question that they were important men. They had seen a bright star appear in the sky and they believed it was a sign from God. They believed that the long-promised king of the Jews had finally been born, so they searched until they found him. When they did, they bowed down to him and gave him gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh.
What would make such important people bow down and worship a little baby? Jesus certainly didn't look like a powerful king that anyone would want to worship. He just looked like a baby. There must have been something about him. Why would they give such expensive gifts to a baby that was sleeping in an animal's food box? There must have been something about him. The Bible tells us that he was called the "King of Kings." He was a king that even other kings followed. There must have been something about him.
I don't know what the Wise Men saw when they looked at Jesus. I do know that it must have been amazing. Maybe they looked at him and saw what perfect love looks like. Maybe they saw him glow with perfect joy. Maybe they looked in his eyes and saw his future: his miracles, his lessons, his death on the cross, his resurrection. Clearly, those Wise Men saw that Jesus was someone to worship. Maybe you and I can learn to see him the way they did.
Prayer: Jesus, even kings worshiped you. You must be something really special. Please help us see what the Wise Men did so we can worship you like they did. Amen.
