King of Kings
Children's Activity
Object:
Children may not be aware that Christmas didn't end until yesterday! The 12 days of Christmas begin on Christmas day and end the day before Epiphany. Today begins the new season of Epiphany. This is the day we tell the story of the Wise Men. Most children assume the kings arrived right after Jesus was born, about the same time the shepherds did. It's easy for them to assume that if they think Christmas lasts only for one day. The kings actually came much later, because they didn't begin looking for Jesus until they saw the star appear.
It's really something to think about these important men traveling so far to worship a tiny baby. They were probably used to people bringing them gifts, but now they were bringing gifts to the new baby king. See if you can find some gold, frankincense and myrrh. The gold is easy: any ring or necklace will do. Frankincense and myrrh are probably available from a Catholic or Christian bookstore. They are types of incense, so you can burn them for your children and experience them.
Sing a little of the hymn, "We Three Kings of Orient Are" by John H. Hopkins, Jr. Celebrate the visitors who came to pay homage to the new king.
