The King of Kings
Children's sermon
Object:
a lot of boxes, each one nesting inside a larger one, so that you have one very large box with a lot boxes inside of it
Good morning, boys and girls. How do you feel today? Do you feel really good? (let them answer) Do you feel very healthy? (let them answer) Do you feel smarter today than you did yesterday? (let them answer) Did you grow taller than you were yesterday -- in other words are you bigger today than you were yesterday? (let them answer) That's good. Do you know anyone stronger than you? (let them answer) Is there anyone smarter than you? (let them answer) Is there anyone bigger than you? (let them answer) What we learn is that there is always someone bigger, someone smarter, or someone older.
I discovered this the other day when I was looking for a box. I found this box that I wanted to use and decided to put something in it. But then I found a box that would let me put my box into it, so I did. But that box wasn't so big when I found this box. (keep it going until you have run out of boxes and you have one big box with many boxes inside of it) I guess there are even bigger boxes if I wanted to keep searching. There always seems to be something bigger if we just keep looking.
But Paul said there is a place where all of this stops. If you find the smartest person on earth, there is one who is smarter. If you find one person who has greater love than anyone else, there is someone who loves more than that person. If you looked and looked for the kindest person on earth, there would be one who was kinder. If you found the strongest person on earth, there would be one who was even stronger. Do you know who that is? (let them answer) That's right -- Jesus.
Today is another special Sunday. We call it Christ the King Sunday because it is the time when we finally say that Christ is the best of all bests.
Saint Paul said God made Jesus the King over the entire world. He did this and said that every man and every animal and every wind or every drop of sunshine would be under Jesus the Christ.
That is why you and I worship Jesus and call him names like the Good Shepherd, or the Lord, or Master, or the Messiah. Paul said Jesus is the King, Christ the King. He is bigger, better, smarter, more loving, more forgiving than all of the people in the world. So today, we celebrate Christ the King Sunday!
Prayer: We thank God for giving us such a wonderful ruler, a King of all kings. Amen.
