The kingdom of Heaven
Children's sermon
Object:
a fishing net
Good morning! I want to ask you a question this morning.
What's it like in Heaven? Are there trees and grass and lakes and
rivers? What do you think it is like? (Let two or three answer
and tell what they think Heaven is like.) The truth is we really
don't know what it's like in Heaven, but we do know it will be
really wonderful. It will be so beautiful and so wonderful that
there is no way for us to describe it.
However, when Jesus was on earth, He talked a lot about the
"kingdom of Heaven" right here on earth. He wasn't talking about
the Heaven that we all go to when we die. He was talking about
the invisible kingdom of Heaven that is right here around us
today. He told people what that was like. That kingdom is the one
that all believers are in from the first moment that they
believe. That kingdom is here right now!
One of the ways Jesus described the kingdom of Heaven was to
say it was like a fishing net. (Show the net.) Of course he
meant a great big net that is thrown from a boat. He said the net
gets full of good fish and bad fish. When the net is full, they
bring it to shore and sort the good fish from the bad. The good
are kept and the bad thrown away. By this Jesus is telling us
that the kingdom of Heaven is only for those who believe. If you
believe, you are like the good fish that are kept. Are you all
good fish? (Let them answer.) That's good. Let's thank God for
putting us into His kingdom.
Dear Father in Heaven: We thank You for making us good fish by
giving us faith which allows us to believe in Jesus. Please keep
us always in Your kingdom. Amen.
