Lazarus, Come Out!
Children's Activity
Object:
Teachers: Tell this story to your class. Have them create a
color and cut-out project about this story. You should create an
example to show your class, so that they know how to make their
own. Tell them the story and use your sample as a visual while
telling the story. Take an 81/2 by 11 sheet of paper. Divide it
in thirds. Each third will measure about 31/2 by 8. At the top of
the first third write "Lazarus was a man." At the top of the
middle third write "He died." At the top of the final third write
"Jesus brought him back to life." Color each panel in a way to
represent the sentence on it. Don't color scenes on the panels.
Instead place designs of color patterns on the panels. The first
panel might include your favorite colors. The second should be
dark colors representing death. The third should be rainbow-type
colors that are very bright and cheerful. Fill as much of the
paper as you can with colors. Take a second 81/2 by 11 paper. In
the center draw a simple shape of a man (about 21/2 by 5 inches).
Cut the shape out of the paper and toss the shape away. Write
"Lazarus, come out!" on the sheet you save. Lay the saved sheet
(with the man's cut-out image) over the first colored panel. As
you tell the story to your students move the cutout sheet over
the appropriately colored panel. For example, when Lazarus dies,
move the cutout over the dark colors. When Jesus commands:
"Lazarus, come out!" move the cutout over the brightly colored
panel. Suggest that your class repeat Jesus' command "Lazarus,
come out!" with you, for effect. After your students hear the
story and see your example, they should be ready to create their
own version.
Parents: Your child wants to tell you about Jesus raising Lazarus from the dead,. He will tell you the story using a cut- out and color project. Help Jesus raise Lazarus by commanding with your child: "Lazarus, come out!" at the end of the story.
