Let your light shine
Children's sermon
Object:
a flashlight
Good morning, boys and girls. I brought a flashlight with me
this morning. What do you do with a flashlight? (Let them
answer.) Have you ever been in the dark and needed a flashlight
to see where you were? (Let them answer.) I want to tell you a
story about some children your age who needed a flashlight.
Once there were some friends who decided to go on a hike out in the country. Before they went on their hike they made certain that they had all the things they needed. They took snacks. They wore good shoes for hiking. They took water in canteens. Finally they began their hike. It wasn't a very long hike. It was just on the edge of town in a woods, so they weren't concerned that they would get lost. They walked and walked. They came to the woods. They entered the woods. They stopped for a snack. Then they continued to walk. Before they realized what time it was, the sun set. It started to get dark. Soon it was so dark that they could barely see. They never thought to take a flashlight. Soon it was night and the friends could not see. They did not know how to get out of the woods. Then one of them saw a light coming toward them. The light became brighter and brighter. It was someone carrying a flashlight! They were safe! The person with the flashlight was one of their parents. The person came to save them.
This story reminds me of this morning's lesson. The lesson tells us to "Let light shine out of darkness." The light that shines out of darkness is Jesus. He is like a flashlight at night, shining the way for us. Jesus wants us to be like him. He wants us to be a flashlight. He wants us to be light that shines in the darkness, just like him.
This week I want you to let your light shine in the darkness. That means to be friendly to others, help others, and tell others about Jesus.
