A letter to God
Children's Activity
Object:
Teachers: Jesus tells a lawyer that the greatest commandment
is to love the Lord with all your heart, soul and mind. Talk with
your class about the things that God has done for them. Make a
list of things that class members are thankful for. Your list
might include: God's love, family, home, church, pets, friends,
schools, teachers and similar things.
Suggest that your students write a letter to God. In the letter have them list things that they are thankful for. You could start the letter for younger students. Suggest that they draw pictures of things that they are thankful for.
The letters could begin like this: Dear God: My name is (name of student) I'm (age) years old. In my family there are (name the members). (Suggest the student write a little about herself here.) I wish to thank you for many things that have happened to me in my life. These include: (have the student list things.) Signed, (name of student).
Suggest that your students keep the letter so that in one year they might read it again. At that time their list of "thankful" things might enlarge.
Parents: Your child learned about the greatest commandment. It is to love God. The letter your child wrote listed things for which she is thankful to God. Talk with your child about the things that have happened in your life for which you are thankful to God for. Some of the things on your list might be things that your child doesn't know about.
A note about next week's activity: Read next week's activity. If you plan to follow it, prepare a note for parents. Ask them to bring a wash cloth and towel next week.
