The Light
Children's Activity
Object:
Teachers or Parents: With the secular tie of Groundhog Day
you an bridge to the ancient Christian custom of Candlemas --
lighting candles in commemoration of the birth of the one who is
the "Light of the world" -- the very one Simeon predicted would
be a light to those of us who are Gentiles.
*Today is Groundhog Day. Does the groundhog really have the ability to predict the weather? (According to Groundhog Day tradition -- if the groundhog sees his shadow today after coming from hibernation, he will return to his hole and we can expect six more weeks of winter. If he does not see his shadow, it's a sure sign of an early spring.) Contrast Punxsutawney Phil with the real ability the prophets had in today's gospel reading to tell about the coming "Light" -- Jesus. (Post the picture of Punxsutawney Phil that is probably in today's newspaper on the wall or bulletin board.)
*Light a Candlemas candle in your home or classroom and reread the gospel. Let the children act out the story.
*Today is the fortieth day after Christmas. Ask about the significance of the number forty in the Bible. Ask, "Why do you suppose the number forty was chosen for this day?" You can build on those questions with these: "Soon we will observe another forty day period of time. What is it? (Lent) And why forty? (because he was tested -- Hebrews 2:14-18 children's sermon)."
Sunday school assembly opening:
*If you observed the coming of the "Light to the Gentiles" by lighting a candle for each week of this Epiphany season, have the children extinguish them at the end of the opening.
*If lighting candles is traditional in your opening, pay special attention to the candles this morning and relate their significance to the One who is the "Light" that Simeon spoke of in today's Gospel reading.
*Sing "Lord, Now Let Your Servant Go In Peace" ("Nunc Dimittis" found in many church liturgies).
