Light of the world Christmas card
Children's Activity
Object:
Teachers: This is an appropriate week to have your class make
Christmas cards. Offer each student a folded 8 1/2 by 11 inch
piece of paper, or provide smaller card stock. If you have a
selection of Christmas cards from previous years, bring them to
class for ideas or for cutting apart and using by your students.
Suggest the theme of the cards be a paraphrase from today's gospel scripture spoken by John:
"The light of the world is coming."
-- John 1:8
Prior to class, get a list of addresses of church members living in retirement homes, or older members who are unable to attend church during colder weather. Tell your students that the cards are going to these persons. If you have a church photo directory, share it with the class. This way they can put a face with a name. On the inside of the card have the student sign her name. You might add the name of the child's parent, so that the older resident has a reference to use in identifying the student. Have the student write the name of the Sunday school class and your church on the card. If your church has mail boxes for members, have the students place the cards in the boxes. Otherwise, mail the cards to the recipients.
Parents: This week your child made a Christmas card for an older member of your church. The theme of the card was "The light of the world is coming," based on John 1:8. Suggest that your child make a similar card this week to send to a grandparent, cousin or friend.
