"Lip service is not enough"
Children's Activity
Object:
Teachers or Parents: Promises need to be kept. God always
keeps His promises, and we need to instill in our children an
understanding of the importance of a promise. If we say we will
do something, we must follow through. The Gospel story today
gives us a really good example of what is meant by obedience to
those in authority. We need to give more than lip service to our
promises to God and to others.
* Ask the children if any of them have ever broken a
promise. If you get volunteers, discuss the promises and the
reasons they were broken. Ask them if God has ever made a promise
that He hasn't kept.
* Make a list on the board or easel of promises to God. List
a few to get them started and then ask them to give examples of
promises that we make to God. When you have an adequate list,
discuss how these promises are often broken. Emphasize the
importance of keeping our promises to God.
Sunday school assembly opening:
* Read the Gospel text and discuss the question of Jesus,
"Which of the two did the will of his father?" Then discuss the
problem with giving "lip service" and not keeping our promises.
