Listen to God
Children's sermon

He sent his slaves to call those who had been invited to the wedding banquet,
but they would not come. (v. 3)
Good morning, boys and girls! Today's lesson talks about a king who invited many people to a party. But when he sent invitations to those people, they refused to go! Have you ever been invited to a party? (allow answers each time) How did that make you feel? Were you excited? Have you ever invited people to your party? Did everyone come that you invited? How did you feel if people didn't come to your party?
Sometimes, just like the king in our story, God sends out invitations for us. Come to church on Sunday! Come to Sunday school or Bible school! Come and pray! Come and read the Bible! It's just like he's inviting us to a party with him. But ... sometimes we don't listen, do we? How many of you sometimes forget to do the things you're supposed to do for God? How many of you have skipped Sunday school? (allow answers) Everybody misses God's invitations sometimes, or maybe we just aren't listening to them. Look what I've brought today. (hold up the hearing aid) Do you know what this is? (allow answers) This is a hearing aid. Do any of you know someone with a hearing aid? If you can't hear very well, you put this in your ear and it helps you understand what other people are saying to you. Maybe one of your grandparents has one of these that lets them hear your voice and talk to you or your mom or dad on the telephone. Sometimes, just like people who need hearing aids, we have a hard time hearing God's invitations. Maybe we're busy with something else. Maybe we just don't feel like it. Maybe we think we have better things to do. Maybe we're distracted with everyday life and don't hear God's invitations. Sometimes we're like the guests that the king in our story invited to his party and we refuse an invitation from the real king: God.
Thankfully, Jesus told us the story about the king and the wedding guests so that we would have a warning about refusing God's invitations. This story is kind of like our biblical hearing aid: When we read it in church, it reminds us to tune in our hearing so that we can hear when God calls us to come to church, Sunday school, Bible school, or youth group.
Unfortunately, we don't have "God-hearing aids" so we can automatically tune in to God. But thanks to Bible stories, your families, and members of the congregation, God's word is never too hard to hear. Your job this week is to listen to God: What would Jesus want you to do? (allow answers each time) Should you argue with your friend? Should you pull your little brother or sister's hair? Should you disobey your parents? Tune in your hearing aids and listen to God! Amen.
