A little girl's glory
Children's sermon
Object:
a picture of the sun with lots of sun's rays pointing to the earth
Good morning, boys and girls. Look at this picture of the sun while I tell you a story. Once there was a little girl. She had a very hard time believing all the stories she heard in church. Some of them just seemed impossible. But she went to church and Sunday school all the time and kept listening to the stories. Every time she heard the word "glory" she instantly got a picture in her mind. What do you think of when you hear the word "glory"? (let them answer) This little girl saw in her mind the rays of the sun shining down on earth. She just knew that's what glory was. So every time she heard the word "glory," there was that picture in her mind of the shining sun's rays. When she heard, "And the glory of the Lord shone round about them," about the angels in the Christmas story, she saw those rays of the sun shining down, even though it was night time in the story. When she heard, "The power and glory, forever" at the end of the Lord's Prayer, she saw those rays of the sun shining down. When she saw a stream of light coming in through the window shining on a stream of dust particles in the air, that was glory. When she sang, "Glory, glory, hallelujah," there was that glory picture of the sun's rays.
Our lesson today is from a prayer Jesus prayed right before his death. He prayed for his friends that God would give them glory, just as God had given Jesus glory. Do you know what the word "glory" really means? (let them answer) "Glory" means worship, praise, and honor. It also means great beauty and magnificence. So that little girl had a good picture in her mind of the beauty of the sun's rays shining down on the earth. The other part of Jesus' prayer was that Jesus' friends could be as one or as close to each other in love as Jesus and God were connected by love. You have to have your own ideas of what glory is and what it means to be connected and joined as one in love. Glory and love are beautiful words. They can be as bright as the sun's rays shining on the earth - God's "glory" coming to us in love.
