Little things
Children's sermon
Object:
a glass of water
Tell me some of the people who are heroes to you. (Let them
answer. Some may name great athletes, musicians, or television
or movie stars.) You have told me about people who have done
great things. (Here, retell, or ask the children to retell, how
a person's great accomplishments have made that name a famous
one.)
When we think of great people, we think of them as being great because of all the big and important things they have done. My hero is ... (Here share your hero or heroine's story.)
Now, how many of you have heard about a person who became famous because he or she offered a glass of water to someone? (Let them answer.) I don't know of anyone. We don't think that offering a thirsty person a glass of water is anything very important. But it is important to God!
One day Jesus' disciples came to him telling about another man who was doing some great things for God. They might have been jealous of the man who was doing such great things for God. They even tried to stop the man from doing these things. But Jesus said not to stop anyone from doing anything that helps God's cause. Even little things like offering a drink of water are important to God.
If offering a thirsty person a glass of water to drink is important to God, what other kinds of things might also be important? (Let them answer.) I am glad that everything we do to help others is important to God. There are no little things, are there?
Dearest Jesus: Help us to keep in mind that we are always serving you. Amen.
