Look-alikes
Children's sermon
Object:
two sets of noses with glasses and two funny look-alike wigs
... saying, "Will proclaim your name to my brothers and sisters, in the midst of
the congregation I will praise you." (v. 12)
Good morning, boys and girls. How many of you have a brother or a sister? (let them answer) Very good! Do you look a little bit like your brother or sister? (let them answer) Sometimes, not all of the time, brothers and sisters look a little bit alike. The older we get, the less we look like each other, but when we are children we look a lot alike. Some of us look like our parents or like an aunt or uncle.
As a matter of fact, if everyone will close his or her eyes for just a minute I will show you something that will really surprise you. (ask the children to put their hands over their eyes while you put on the mask of eyes and nose and wig) This is how I used to look when I was younger. I had a brother (sister) that looked almost like I looked. I wonder if he/she came to church this morning? (pretend you are looking around until you spot your friend with a similar mask, standing up) There he/she is and I think you can see the resemblance, but times have changed and I still look a little like this but my brother/sister has really changed. (have the person sit down)
The reason that I say this is because we have a lot of people in heaven that are a lot like the way we are on earth. As a matter of fact, Jesus calls us brothers and sisters. After Jesus returned to heaven, he welcomed many believers who had died on earth but were now also in heaven with him. Jesus said that because he died and led the way into heaven so all of his followers would also be a part of the heavenly family. We are going to know God and love God just as Jesus loves God. We will never again have to worry or be afraid of anything because Jesus doesn't worry and he isn't afraid. We are going to be so close to him that he will tell you that you are his brother or sister.
Can you say this with me? If you are a boy, say, "I am a brother of Jesus and I live in his world." If you are a girl, say, "I am a sister of Jesus and I live in his world." Let's say it all together. (have them repeat it several times) Isn't this wonderful news? Every morning when you get up to start your day say, "I am a brother or sister of Jesus and I am a part of his day in everything that I do." This will make you feel great and you can share the good news with everyone. Amen.
