Look for the star
Children's sermon
Object:
A star given to the parents of the youngest child present
in the congregation (perhaps the ushers can arrange to do this
just prior to the service)
Today we are going to be like the wise men from the East who
looked for baby Jesus. They were told the wonderful story about a
promised Messiah who would save the world. He was the "king of
the Jews" and would be king of all people. They traveled a great
distance. They wanted to see the baby. They had to see the baby!
So they left and ended up in Jerusalem. There they asked about
the promised king.
The man who was king became very jealous. Even though they were looking for a spiritual king -- a king of our hearts, minds, and souls -- King Herod thought this little king might want to take over his throne. He wanted the wise men to find the baby and then report back to him where the baby was.
Today, we are going to look for the baby just like the men from the East. We shall go throughout the congregation looking for the Messiah. (Go from one place to another and ask people in the congregation if they are the Messiah. They, of course, will answer, "No. Look for the star." Then find the parents with the baby and ask, "Are you the Messiah?" They will answer, "He is under the star.")
We have pretended to be like the wise men from the East. We have found the baby the way they found the baby -- under the star. The only difference is that the star today was not real and the baby is not the real Messiah. The wise men followed a real star and found the real Messiah.
Dear God: Thank you for our Messiah Jesus. Amen.
