Lost and found
Children's sermon
Object:
Good morning, boys and girls. How many of you have ever lost
something? (Wait for show of hands.) I think all of us lose something at
one time or another, no matter how careful we are. Let's look at this lost
and found box and see what we have. (Hold up items one by one and talk
about them.) Here's one mitten. Only one. Here's another one, but they don't
match. Some children I know always called this kind mismatched mittens.
If their hands are cold enough, they'll be glad to have a pair of mismatched
mittens. Here's a large screw. Can you guess what it's missing from? (Let
them guess.) It's from a bunk bed set. Every time it's time to move beds, a
screw gets lost in all the toys and a new one has to be bought before the
beds can be put up. Here's a pretty earring. I know that it's popular for
some people to wear only one earring. But I think the owner would be very
sad to lose this one. Here's a wallet. Let's see if it has money in it. (Look
inside.) There's a dollar in it! Someone would be very happy if this was
found! Here's a picture. I don't know who it is, but whoever lost it must be
sad. This person might be very special to someone.
That is what our lesson is about -- things that are lost and things that are found. Our lesson tells two stories about lost and found things. One story is about a lost sheep. The shepherd has 100 sheep and he can only find 99. One of them is lost and the shepherd looks and looks until he finds it. The lost sheep is very special to the shepherd and when he finds it he is very happy. The other story is about a woman with ten coins. She loses one. How many does she have left? (Let them respond.) She has nine left. She cleans out her whole house looking for the lost coin. When she finds it she is very, very happy. She said, "I am so happy I found my lost coin. Let us celebrate."
The shepherd and the woman both lost something very special to them. All the things in this box are special to someone. Each one of us is very special to someone, too. We are special to our parents, but we are also special to God. God says, "I'm so happy I found each one of you. You are special to me!"
