Love and paint
Children's sermon
Object:
a gallon of house paint, a brush, and a painter's hat
Good morning, boys and girls. I have a special hat that painters use when they paint. It keeps the paint off their hair. I need a volunteer. (choose a child to wear the hat while you talk) What season of the year is it? (let them answer) It's springtime. In the spring there are lots of new things going on in nature. There are lots of flowers in bloom. People plant them right about now in some parts of the country. The trees are budding and have new green leaves. In the spring is when many of the baby animals are born. If you live in a part of the country with a very cold winter, this would be the time of the year when it's getting warmer outside and you might want some fresh air inside your house. If you look inside houses at this time of the year, some people are doing spring housecleaning. They wash walls and windows and curtains and clean cupboards and fix up their dresser drawers. If you look outside you might also see people doing yard work. They might be mowing their lawns, planting flowers, and trimming bushes. If they live in a place that doesn't have special vinyl or aluminum siding, they might also be painting their house. Have you ever seen a house that needs painting? (let them answer) What does it look like? (let them describe it) The paint is peeling and if there's a different color underneath, it shows through where the paint has peeled. Houses that need painting need scraping first. All the chipped paint is scraped off. Then it's time to paint with a brush like this. (show the brush and the paint) What does it look like when it's done? (let them answer) It looks fresh and new!
Our lesson says that God does that for us. God covers us up with love, and God's love makes everything fresh and new. Does God use a paintbrush? (let them answer) No, but God's love makes us all fresh and new and sparkling just like a newly-painted house.
