Love your neighbors
Children's sermon
Object:
a mirror
Good morning, boys and girls! Did you do anything special this week? (let them answer) Did you do anything special all by yourself -- I mean without your mother or father or without your brother or sister or friend? Did you do anything all alone that was really great? (let them answer)
That's funny -- almost everything we did that was really special we did with someone else.
I brought along one of my favorite friends. (show the mirror) I call this friend Mighty Mirror because it makes me feel great. I get up in the morning and I can hardly wait to look into Mighty. I look real hard and I see this wonderful picture. The man in the mirror is so handsome. I hold Mighty right in front of me while I brush my fabulous teeth. I hold Mighty right there while I comb my gorgeous hair. I look at those beautiful big brown eyes and that perfect nose and I think to myself how good it is to look like me.
How many of you have a friend like Mighty? (let them answer) Does your mirror tell you how wonderful you are? (let them answer) Not really. It actually sounds awful, doesn't it?
God does want us to love ourselves and the life he has given us. God loves us and believes he made something very special when he made us. So God wants us to love ourselves in the right way. Love is more than being beautiful. Love is something that God gives to us to share.
As a matter of fact God tells us that being a disciple of Jesus means that we should love others as much as we love ourselves. Love means giving. Love means sharing lunch, taking a walk, listening to our friends, helping others when they need help. Love means praying together and working together. Love is welcoming someone you don't even know into your home and feeding them or letting them play with your favorite toy.
So if someone asks you if you love yourself, you can tell them that the way you love yourself is not by looking in Mighty Mirror but you love yourself when you are sharing your life with others. It is like doing something really special. When it is really special, it is something you have done with and for someone else.
Prayer: O God, help us to love ourselves and others. But most of all, help us to love and serve you. In Jesus' name. Amen.
