Loving "bad people"
Children's sermon
Object:
a toy that is broken (on purpose)
Good morning, boys and girls. I want to tell you a story this
morning about this broken toy. (Show the toy.) This toy wasn't
broken accidentally. It was broken by someone who was nasty and
did it on purpose. The child who did it always seemed to be in
trouble. On the playground he pushed other children. In school he
always butted in front of others in the lunch line. He was always
getting into trouble. He didn't have many friends. Most of the
children avoided him. He needed a friend and needed a chance to
change his ways and become a good friend himself.
This morning's lesson is about someone in Jesus' day who was like that boy. It is about someone who many people didn't like. People didn't like this person because he was always cheating them. One day Jesus was walking in a village and saw this man. You'll never believe what Jesus said to the man. Jesus was not mean to the man. Jesus was friendly! Jesus said to the man, "Follow me!" Jesus wanted the man to start a new life. He wanted him to quit cheating others. When Jesus said, "Follow me!" that is exactly what the man did. He quit cheating others. The man invited Jesus to supper. He brought his friends to meet Jesus. By the way, people didn't like the man's friends, either. His friends cheated people, also. But, these people wanted to change their ways, too.
When some of the religious leaders discovered that Jesus was eating with these people that no one liked they became angry with Jesus. "Making friends with people who cheat others will get you in trouble," they told Jesus. Jesus answered very clearly. Jesus told them that he came to earth to help people who need help. Jesus' action means that if we are to follow Jesus we should show mercy. That means we should try to be friendly to those who have few friends because of how they treat others. Jesus wants to help those persons. Jesus wants us to love others.
