Luke, the physician
Children's sermon
Object:
a medical book of some kind
Good morning! Today, I'd like to talk about Saint Luke, the
man who wrote the Gospel of Luke in our Bible. Does anybody know
what Luke's occupation was? (Let them answer.) Luke was a
physician, a doctor.
Look at this book that I brought. (Show the book.) This is a
book written by doctors. Doctors are trained scientists. They
don't publish this kind of book until they are sure that it's
absolutely true. They wouldn't want somebody to read their book
and do something that would hurt them or even kill them, would
they? (Let them answer.) No, of course not. They investigate
everything very carefully and write down the facts that will help
people.
So when Luke decided to write his Gospel about the life of
Jesus, do you think he would investigate everything very
carefully and be sure that he had all the facts? (Let them
answer.) Yes, he most certainly would. He was a trained scientist
in his time, and he would check everything out before he wrote it
down. In fact, right at the beginning of his Gospel, he says that
he did investigate everything very carefully and then wrote an
orderly account of what he knew to be true. Aren't you glad that
we had a man like Luke to tell us the truth about the life of
Jesus? (Let them answer.) Let's thank God for Luke, the physician
who wrote about Jesus.
Dear Father in Heaven: We thank You for calling this man Luke to
be one of four men who wrote the truth about Jesus in a Gospel.
We thank You for preserving that Gospel for us through all the
centuries so that we can know the truth. Amen.
