Lunch for one
Children's sermon
Object:
Fill a box with animal crackers. Give it to an usher before the service and have him/her select a child to bring the box forward at the time of the children's sermon. Tell the child not to open it.
Good morning, boys and girls. I want to tell you a story about a young boy and his lunch. Jesus had been teaching people on one side of the Sea of Galilee when he decided to sail to the other side. A large crowd walked all the way around the sea until they caught up with Jesus near a grassy spot on the side of a hill. The Bible says there were 5,000 people in the crowd. Let's see: How many people are here today in our church? (give the children an idea of how many people there are in church and then compare it to 5,000)
The people were getting hungry and Jesus knew that they needed to be fed. Andrew told Jesus that there was one little boy present who had five loaves of bread and two fish. The loaves of bread would have been about the size of my hand, and the fish were probably about this long. (hold up your hand and show the distance between your thumb and forefinger) Imagine how the little boy felt when Jesus asked to look at his lunch.
Would you feel special if someone chose you to share what you had with all of the rest of the boys and girls? (let them answer) I see one of you did bring a box with you this morning. I wonder if I could look inside of it and see what you have in your box. (open the box) Isn't this wonderful? Would you like to share it with everyone here this morning? (have the child with the box share it with the children present) Has everyone had at least one piece? Very good, maybe we can share it with everyone after the church service is over.
Jesus chose one little boy and his lunch to share with 5,000 people. Can you imagine how good you would have felt if Jesus had chosen you? Well, Jesus has chosen you to share what you have with others. Sometimes we forget and think that everything we have belongs to us. But really God gives us enough for each one of us with the hope that we will share some of the extra that we have with others. In the same way Jesus turned lunch for one little boy into lunch for 5,000 people, God can make a miracle out of you if you are willing to share what God has given you.
When you go home today, ask your mother and dad what your family has to share with Jesus, and tell them how glad you are that Jesus has chosen you to be a special person.
