Made by God
Children's sermon
Object:
a doll (and, if possible, a newborn child)
Good morning! How many of you have dolls? (Let them
answer.) Many young people like to play with dolls. It's fun to
pretend that a doll is a real, live baby. You can dress a doll
in doll clothes and you can carry your doll around like a real
child. You can even feed some dolls and some dolls cry. Tell me
about some dolls that you have seen. (Let them answer.)
Today I thought it might be interesting to see what a real
baby is like. With a real baby we don't have to pretend. You
really can feed a baby. A baby will cry when he or she is hungry
or wet. A real baby moves on her own. A real baby is much
different from a doll. Dolls can be lots of fun, but they are
not the same as a real baby.
The difference between a doll and a real baby is that dolls
are made by machines that are made by people. A real baby is
made by God. We have some wonderful dolls that can do many
things a real baby can, and some of the dolls look just like real
babies. But God makes the babies and people make the dolls.
There is a big difference!
Many years ago, the apostle Paul went around teaching and
preaching the good news about God. He said that this good news
was not something he made up. It was not something that somebody
else made up. It was something that came from God. It was God
who made the good news we call the Gospel.
Dolls are nice but they are not nearly so nice as real
people -- babies. Likewise, what people say is good to hear, but
not nearly so good to hear as the good news that God gave to Paul
and to us as well. The good news is about Jesus, who came to
save us all from our sins and to give us new life. I'm so
thankful to God for this good news that God himself gives us.
Dear God: Thank you for real good news. Amen.
