Make the right choice
Children's sermon
Object:
a bowl of dirt with dirty things in it, and a candy bar
Good morning! I thought I would let you make a choice this
morning between a couple of different things to eat. Here is a
bowl of dirt with a lot of icky-looking things in it. Would any
of you like to eat what's in this bowl? (Let them answer.) No, of
course you wouldn't! Nobody wants to eat something like that.
But how about this? (Show the candy bar.) Would any of you like
to eat this? (Let them answer.) Yes, this is something we would
all like to eat. Candy bars are good to eat, while dirty things
like what's in the bowl are not good to eat.
It would be nice if all the choices we have to make in life
were this easy. Unfortunately, sometimes evil, bad things don't
really look bad like the stuff in the bowl. Sometimes they look
really appealing. But God wants us to hate all evil things, even
when they may look good. For example, it may look like it would
be fun to go along with the crowd and tease somebody because they
are different, but it is really very evil. As you grow older, you
will have to make a lot of choices about what is good and what is
bad. God wants you to hate the evil things and hold on to what is
good. Do all of you want to do that? (Let them answer.) Good!
Let's ask God to help us do that.
Dear God: Please help us to see clearly what is evil and what is
good and to hate the evil and hold on to the good. Give us the
wisdom and the strength to make the right choices. Amen.
