Making melody
Children's Activity
Object:
Teachers or Parents: Music is a theme in this lesson. Help
your children make rhythm shakers. This project requires two
paper plates for each student plus some small stones or pop corn
kernels. Give children the plates. Have them decorate the bottom
sides (not the side where food is placed). You might suggest to
have children write "(Name of child) makes melody to the Lord" on
one.
When the decorating is finished the plates will be taped or stapled together. Tape them so the only parts that touch are the outside rims. This leaves a pocket (empty space) inside where the stones or corn kernels may be placed. Before you completely tape the two plates together give each student about one-half cup of kernels or stones to place in the pocket formed by the plates. The children now have a rhythm instrument to shake when they sing. When the shakers are completed sing a song with the children. Have them shake their newly-made instruments as they sing.
