The marks on Jesus
Children's sermon
Object:
a dogwood blossom or a photo of a dogwood blossom
Do you see this flower? It is called a dogwood. There is
something interesting about this flower. Do you see what's here,
on the edges of the petals? On the edge of each of the four
petals is a little mark.
The marks on this flower remind some people of Jesus. Here's
why. When Jesus was crucified he was nailed to a cross. The nails
went through his hands and feet, leaving holes in his skin. When
he came back from the dead he showed some of the disciples the
scars where the nail holes had been. He had a scar on each foot
and on each hand -- four marks, just like on this flower.
After Jesus came back from the dead, not all of the
disciples had seen Jesus and his scars. Some had only heard
stories. One man, Thomas, had heard the others talk about seeing
Jesus, but he didn't believe that Jesus was really alive. He
wanted to see for himself. He said that until he could see the
scars on Jesus' hands and feet he wouldn't believe that Jesus had
come back from the dead.
So, a week later, Jesus came to Thomas and showed him the
scars. Thomas could then believe that the miracle about Jesus was
a true one. Jesus would have liked for Thomas to believe without
needing proof, but he also understood that his scars were
important. The marks were a reminder of all the pain that Jesus
went through. Even today people look to things like this dogwood
to help them remember what Jesus did for us.
Prayer: Thank you, Jesus, for all you've done for us. It wasn't
easy for you to do what you did. Thank you for the dogwood and
how it reminds us of you. Amen.
