Mary's song of praise
Children's sermon
Object:
Mary from a manger scene
Good morning, boys and girls. Have you ever felt so happy that
you sang a song to yourself? Maybe you don't know that you
sometimes sing to yourself. Ask your parents. I'll bet they hear
you sing to yourself. When you do it, you feel good. I want to
tell you the story about a girl your age whose name was Mary. She
was feeling very good about herself. It was very near Christmas.
She was playing around her family Christmas tree. As she played
she looked at the ornaments on the tree. Her family had a manger
scene. She played with it. As she did she sang a song. She was
very happy.
This story about the little girl reminds me of this morning's lesson. Before I tell you about the lesson, I want to show you something. I brought something with me this morning. (Show the Mary figurine.) Can anyone tell me who this is and where it came from? (Let them answer.) This is a very important woman named Mary. She is part of a manger scene. Mary is the mother of Jesus. Something very wonderful happened to Mary. It made her feel so good that she also sang to herself. Mary went to her friend Elizabeth's house. When she got there the two had a good visit. While Mary was there, Elizabeth told her how special it would be for Mary to have God's own son for her child. Mary was so thankful about what was going to happen to her that she sang a special song to God. She thanked God for choosing her, just an ordinary girl from a small town.
The next time you feel happy and sing, remember Mary. Mary is the mother of Jesus. She felt happy when she knew she would be Jesus' mother. She felt so happy that she sang about it also. The words of her song are in this morning's lesson. When you hear the lesson read, listen to the words that Mary sang.
