some photos of friends and family
I thank my God every time I remember you. (v. 3)
Good morning, boys and girls. I brought along some pictures of people that I want to remember. I keep a lot of pictures in my billfold to help me remember. Here is a picture of my father and mother. I have great parents. I really love them, and when I look at their pictures I remember all of the times we shared when I was growing up. Here is a picture of my brother. What a great guy. He always helped me when we were growing up. He took me places that I would not be allowed to go unless he took me with him. Here is a very good friend of mine. I went to school with him. We lived close by so we saw a lot of each other. Here's a picture of __________. We have been married for ____ years. When I am away, I remember a lot of things that we like to do together.
All of us have pictures. Do you have special pictures of a friend or your mom or dad? (let them answer) Pictures are very special.
Saint Paul did not have a camera or photographs. He lived before cameras, television, or any kind of pictures. Instead, he used his memory. He could remember what people looked like and how much they loved God. Close your eyes and see if you can remember how someone you really love looks. (let them close their eyes and then begin to ask them who they remembered) Did you see what the person looked like? Who did you see with your eyes closed? (let them answer)
Our memories are wonderful gifts from God. As you grow older, you will have many memories, some about home and your family. Others about school and all of your friends. You may think about a time you went to the movie or played in the championship game. Memories are great.
Paul remembered the people that lived in Philippi and how they all worshiped the Lord. Paul remembered how they formed a church and shared their gifts with people who were old and alone. He remembered how the sick were cared for in a special way. Paul could hardly wait to get back and see those people, but until he got there he had to remember how they looked and what they did.
We need our memories so that we can care for people that God is concerned about. Jesus wants us to have a picture of hungry people, people without homes, people who are sick, and people who are lonely. Some of them live around us in our neighborhood. Some we see on television or read about in our church papers or magazines. Our memories are wonderful gifts from God and just like Paul, we need to use them.
Then next time you are just sitting around, try this: Close your eyes, remember someone who needs your prayers, and then pray as hard as you can for them. This will really please Jesus and the people you prayed for will be blessed. Amen.
