The message
Children's sermon
Object:
a message written in code, a message hidden inside the cap of your
pen
And how are they to proclaim him unless they are sent? As it is written, "How
beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!" (Romans 10:15)
Good morning, boys and girls. Have you ever been a messenger? (let them answer) A messenger is someone who carries a message from one person to another person. When I was growing up, we listened to radio shows that had secret messengers. They carried a message written in code and they had to keep it in secret hiding places. I brought along one of those messages written in code. (show them the coded message) Only the person who is supposed to get the message knows the code and after they receive the message they can read what it says. Other messages were hidden in places that you would never look, like inside of my pen cap. It's hard to get it out, but there is a message in the pen cap. (let them see the paper all rolled up and stored in the cap) Those were wonderful radio shows and I would sit and listen to them and never move an inch.
We don't always have to hide the message. Sometimes we are asked to deliver the note. The exciting time is when the messenger is asked to go and tell the message to anyone that will listen and to everyone that can hear. This is the message from Jesus. Jesus asks us to take the message of his life and his teachings and share it with everyone. I love to sit down and share the message of Jesus with just one person or I love to share it with hundreds like we do here every Sunday. I want everyone to know God sent Jesus into the world to die for our sins and how he was resurrected and lives again every moment of every day in our hearts. I love to tell how Jesus helps me tell others when I am carrying their load, or sharing my meal with them, caring for them when they are hurt and celebrating with them when they marry and have babies.
Jesus gives us such a great message that it is called the "good news." That's what the word "gospel" means. It means good news and the good news is about Jesus and his life, death, and new life after the resurrection.
It is a lot of fun to play with coded messages and hidden messages but the real message for all of us to share is the message about Jesus. The next time someone asks you to be a messenger, ask if you can share your message about Jesus. Amen.
