More precious than gold
Children's sermon
Object:
something gold -- like gold jewelry
... so that the genuineness of your faith -- being more precious than gold that,
though perishable, is tested by fire -- may be found to result in praise and glory and
honor when Jesus Christ is revealed. (v. 7)
Good morning, boys and girls. I don't suppose any of you have something gold, do you? (let them answer) Gold is very valuable and most of us do not have a lot of gold. If you have something that is made of gold it is worth a lot of money. Gold is not easy to find. You can't find it in your backyard or hanging on a tree. It takes a lot of work to find just a tiny bit of gold and that makes it worth a lot of money.
It has always been worth a lot of money. The Bible talks about gold as being precious. If you have a gold watch you take very special care of it. I brought some gold that we have at home. It is kept in a special place and we take very good care of it.
The Bible teaches us that we also have something that is more precious than gold. Do you know what is more valuable than gold? (let them answer) The Bible teaches us that our faith is more valuable than gold. The faith that is inside of us and tells us to love Jesus and to believe in Jesus is more valuable than gold. Our faith is more precious because it lasts forever and because it will be with us when we see Jesus in heaven.
What do you think is more valuable? Would you want to have some gold that you can place on your finger, wear around your neck, or hang from your ears or would you like the faith that lives inside of you and brings you close to Jesus? (let them answer) You would rather know Jesus and so would I because Jesus is more precious than gold.
The next time you see something that is gold and very expensive, ask yourself the question. Is this gold worth as much as Jesus? I think we all know the answer. That answer is Jesus -- the most precious of all gifts. Amen.
