The most important
Children's sermon
Object:
military stripes (corporal vs. sergeant)
Having become as much superior to angels as the name he has inherited is
more excellent than theirs. (v. 4)
Good morning, boys and girls. I wonder if we ever think about who is important or who is the most important? Let me ask you a question. Who is the most important in school, the teacher or the student? (let them answer) Who is the most important in school, the teacher or the principal? (let them answer) Let's try some more questions about who is the most important. I brought along some stripes from a military uniform. (show the stripes) These are for a corporal and these are for a sergeant. Which person is the most important? (let them answer) Who is the most important, the choir member or the choir director? (let them answer) Who is the most important, the father or the son? (let them answer) Very good! You know all of the answers.
The writer of the book of Hebrews talks about the same kind of thing regarding Jesus and the angels. When Jesus died and then returned to be with his Father, it was different in heaven. Who do you think would be the most important? Was it the angels that announced the birth of Jesus and formed the greatest choir ever heard? (let them answer) Was it the angels who spoke to Mary the mother of Jesus and Joseph? (let them answer) Was it the angel that met Mary Magdalene at the tomb where Jesus was buried? (let them answer) Or was it Jesus, the child who was born to Mary and placed in a manger? (let them answer) Was it Jesus who healed thousands, fed thousands, and taught thousands? (let them answer) Was it Jesus who was crucified on a cross and buried in a tomb? (let them answer) Was it Jesus who was resurrected from the dead and ascended straight up into heaven? (let them answer)
The answer is that Jesus is far more superior to angels or humans or animals or trees or anything. The Bible teaches us that his name is above all names. Jesus is God.
The next time you see someone with stripes on their uniform and you try to figure out who is the most important, I want you to remember that the child named Jesus is the most important of all. Amen.
