When Jesus saw that he answered wisely, he said to him, "You are not far from the kingdom of God." After that no one dared to ask him any question. (v. 34)
Good morning, boys and girls. I have been looking for several days to find God's kingdom and I just can't see it on my map. I see a lot of other countries, some that are ruled by kings and queens like in England and Denmark (show them on the map the island of Great Britain and Denmark), but I can't find the kingdom of God. There is a lot of water on our earth, isn't there? (let them answer) I am sure the kingdom of God isn't under water. There are some very tiny countries on our earth but I have checked them out and none of them are the kingdom of God. Do you see the very small countries? (let them look)
The reason I am hunting the kingdom of God is because I read a verse in the Bible where Jesus told a man that he was not far from the kingdom. Not far means pretty close. Jesus was talking to the man right about here. (show them Israel on the map) I took a string and held it tight against Israel and then I made a circle that was not too far from where Jesus spoke. It would be in this area. (make a circle with your finger) I have looked and looked and looked but I don't see any place called the kingdom of God.
Is there anyone here that can help me? (let them answer) Do you see the kingdom of God written on the map? (let them answer) I wonder where it is? Jesus told the man that he was not far from it. Do you suppose that Jesus could have meant something else? Maybe Jesus was not talking about a place on earth but instead about something that was not an ordinary place.
Maybe this will help. If I asked you where you lived would you tell me, "I live in a house," or would you tell me you lived in your home? There are a lot of houses, but there is only one place that you call home. It is built like all of the other houses. It has a roof, walls, windows, doors, floors, and rooms, but there is something different about your home than the other houses, isn't there? (let them answer) In your home there is something called love. Your mom and dad love you. Your brother and sister love you. When your grandparents come to visit you, they bring their love and you give them love right back.
There are a lot of kingdoms, but there is only one kingdom of God. It is a place where God has filled it with love for all of us. We can't see it on a map or visit it in our car, but it is very real and it is some place that God is waiting for us. Some of us call it heaven, others call it by different names, but it is the most special place in the entire world. Someday, at the right time, we will all live there with the Lord Jesus. Amen.
