My Lent promise
Children's Activity
Object:
Teachers: The gospel lesson tells us that the cross is
necessary for Jesus' promise to us for eternal life. Peter didn't
understand this. Often we don't understand it either. In the
Bible, making a promise with God is called a covenant. God
promises to give us eternal life. We promise to follow God.
Discuss promises with your students. Ask the question: "What does it mean to make a promise?" Help your class make a list of promises individuals would like to make with God during Lent. Explain that Lent continues until the end of March. You can get the discussion started by suggesting, "I promise to ... be friendly to others, help at home, listen while others talk, keep my room cleaned, feed my pets" and so on.
After the discussion, give each student a piece of paper. Have students draw a picture of one of the things that they promise to do during Lent. At the top of the picture the student may write the words "My Lent Promise."
Parents: Your child talked about making promises during Lent. One of the things he promised to do is on the drawing he brought home. Talk about promises and what they mean. Make your own list of things you promise to do during Lent. Share them with your child.
