Name above all names
Children's sermon
Object:
a doll or stuffed animal
Good morning, boys and girls. Do any of you have stuffed
animals or dolls that you have named? (Let them answer.) This
morning I brought (give the name and explain what the toy is).
It's fun to name toys.
I want to tell you about a girl your age who had some stuffed animals and some dolls. She also had a cat. It was very important to this girl that all of these toys and her cat had names. Names tell us so much about something. She took her time and thought and thought about good names for everything. Finally, she named her cat Midnight. What color do you suppose her cat was (Let them answer.) She named one of her stuffed animals Teddy. What kind of a stuffed animal do you think Teddy was? (Let them answer.) She had another stuffed animal that was green. She named it Kermit. What kind of stuffed animal do you think Kermit was? (Let them answer.) You are all very good at this! She had another important toy, which had long hair and wore a dress, which she named Sarah. What kind of toy do you think Sarah was? (Let them answer.) There were many other toys and dolls that she named. After she named them all, she felt very good.
Just as the little girl named her toys and dolls, our parents gave us important names. There is one other person who has an important name that I want to tell you about. That person is Jesus. Our lesson this morning tells us that God gave Jesus the name that is above every name. God gave Jesus such an important name that everyone in heaven and earth should bow before him and should say that Jesus Christ is Lord.
The next time you have a new pet, or doll or stuffed animal, I know that you will give it a name. When you name it, remember that God gave Jesus the name that is above all names. Jesus is Lord.
