The name of Jesus
Children's sermon
Object:
a card with "Jesus" printed in large letters on one side
and other titles for Jesus on the other side
Good morning! In the Gospel reading we heard that an angel
appeared to Joseph in a dream and told him that he was to name
the baby who would be born to Mary "Jesus." (Show them the card
with Jesus written on it.) Now why do you think the angel told
him to use that name? Why didn't he want the baby to be named
Fred or Harry or Bob? (Let them answer.)
It has to do with the meaning of the name "Jesus." Does
anybody know what the name means? (Let them answer.) The name
Jesus means "Savior," and that's the reason the angel said, "You
are to name him Jesus for he will save his people from their
sins."
Now Jesus is called by a lot of other names. For instance
(show the reverse side of the card), all of these are names we
give to him, but the most important one for you and me is this
one -- Jesus, our Savior!
He came to save all of us from our sins, and if he hadn't
done that none of these other names would matter. Jesus means
Savior and that's what he truly is for all of us.
You know that Christmas is only five days away. Whose
birthday do we celebrate on Christmas? (Let them answer.) Of
course, we celebrate the birth of Jesus, our Savior. The gifts we
give and receive on Christmas are meant to remind us of the
wonderful gift that God gave to us on that first Christmas day,
our Savior Jesus Christ. Let's thank God for that gift now.
Dear God: We thank You so much for sending us Jesus, our friend
and our beautiful Savior. Amen.
