A neighbor at school
Children's sermon
Object:
A school lunch pail
Good morning, boys and girls. How many of you take your lunch
to school or to your day care center? (Let them answer.) When you
take your lunch do you carry it in a bag or in a pail? (Let them
answer.) I brought a lunch pail from my house today to show you.
Do any of you have a pail like this one? (Let them answer.) This
lunch pail makes me think of this morning's lesson. In the lesson
we are told to love our neighbor like we love ourselves. When you
love your neighbor you are doing the right thing.
Here's a story to help us understand how to love our neighbor. Once there was a little boy who went to day care (or school). On this day he carried his lunch in a lunch pail. When it was his class' turn to eat lunch he took his pail to the lunch room. There all the children were eating. Because the school year had just started he didn't know all the boys and girls in his room. As he sat down to eat he noticed another boy across from him who was looking pretty sad. It turned out that the other boy had forgotten to bring his lunch! The boy with the lunch pail opened his lunch and started to eat. He couldn't help but notice the boy across from him with no lunch. So, he looked into his lunch pail and realized he had two peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. He asked the boy with no lunch if he would like one of the sandwiches. The expression of the boy with no lunch suddenly changed from sad to glad! Then a girl sitting at the table said, "I have half an apple I can share." Another boy at the table said, "You may have one of my carrot strips." Another girl offered one of her cookies. Soon everyone at the table was sharing.
Without knowing what they did, these children loved their neighbor as themselves. They shared their lunch. Jesus wants us to love our neighbors, too.
