Never hungry again
Children's sermon
Object:
br>Jesus said to them, "I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty." (v. 35)
Object: a large cooking dish, covered with foil or lid, and some oven mitts (put a Bible inside the dish)
Good morning, boys and girls! How many of you are ready for Thanksgiving dinner? (let them answer) What are you going to eat today? (let them answer) That sounds wonderful! Do you have room for me to eat with you? (let them answer)
I imagine that after you eat everything today that you will never have to eat again. You will be so stuffed that your parents won't ever have to cook again! (let them comment) You mean that you are going to eat tomorrow and the next day? (let them answer) I am surprised!
I brought along my Thanksgiving meal to share with you. It must be pretty hot since I am using gloves to carry it. I suppose some of you are hungry? (let them answer) Good!
Now, before I take the foil off, I want to make sure that you eat every day. Is that true? Even if you eat a big Thanksgiving dinner this afternoon, you will still be hungry tonight? (let them answer)
Well, I have something that will completely fill you up. If you like it, you will always be full and you will never be thirsty. Sounds good, doesn't it? (put on the oven mitts and carefully remove the foil) You are going to love this. (take out the Bible) Look what my wife fixed for all of us. I guess she was reading the Bible and thought that we should think about this: (read) "Jesus said to them, 'I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.' "
People eat every day, all kinds of food and all kinds of drinks. But they get hungry again because it only fills their stomachs. Every four hours or so stomachs need to be refilled with food. Even when we eat a big turkey dinner and all the other foods, we get hungry later the same day.
But Jesus said we should fill our lives with him and we will never feel spiritually hungry. We will be filled with the Holy Spirit. We will be filled with joy, kindness, love, and thanksgiving. We won't worry about when we are going to eat the next time. We know that God will provide us with food just like he does for all the creatures he has made. When we are filled with God we look for ways to share kindness.
So the next time you sit down to eat, ask your mom or dad to read you a Bible story so that you can fill up on the Spirit of God and know the joy of never being spiritually hungry.
