A new command
Children's sermon
Object:
towel and basin filled with water
Jesus told his disciples about how the greatest of them would
be servant and that the last shall be first. Then he showed them
what he meant. He took a towel and a basin of water -- like these
-- and washed the disciples' feet.
Today is "Maundy Thursday." That name comes from the Latin word that means command. Jesus said "I give you a new command that you love one another." We show our love by what we do for one another. Jesus showed his disciples how we are to act when he washed his followers' feet. We no longer live in the times when people wear sandals and do not take daily baths. Furthermore people no longer walk everywhere. For this reason we do not very often wash one another's feet. But we continue to follow Jesus' command to serve one another.
Every generation of believers in Jesus has followed this command. In some generations hospitals were built. Others built schools and orphanages. Some sent missionaries to far-off lands. Most helped their neighbor whenever the neighbor or friend had a need. Even today we do many things to help others because Jesus told us we are to love others as we love ourselves. How many things can you think of that we as a congregation do to help others as Jesus told us to? (Let them answer.)
Jesus loves us and we love others in the same way. That is the way it is supposed to be in our Christian faith.
