Good morning, boys and girls. How many of you have ever been
to a wedding? (Let them answer.) Did you attend the reception
after the wedding? That's where they cut the cake and sometimes
open gifts for the bride and groom. (Let them answer.) Wedding
receptions sometimes are like big parties. Everyone is happy.
There is usually plenty of cake and food to eat and things to
drink.
Can you imagine attending a wedding reception where they run out of things to drink? That might be difficult to imagine. That happened once at a wedding party, which Jesus attended.
Jesus was invited to a wedding party. Everybody there was happy for the bride and groom. They ate a lot of food and drank a lot of wine. But just when everybody was beginning to enjoy themselves, the wine ran out! The party would be over much too soon.
When Jesus' mother, Mary, saw the trouble, she asked Jesus to do something. Jesus saw six, great big jars that people used to wash themselves. He told the workers to fill all of them with water. When they did it, Jesus told them to take some of it and serve it to the guests.
The workers thought, "We can't serve water when we should be serving wine." But they did what they had been told. The water in the jars had turned to wine. Jesus had performed his first miracle. Here's what I want you to remember about this story. First, Jesus didn't turn the water to wine as a magic trick. Jesus was not a magician. This was not a magic trick. We know who Jesus was -- he was God's son. That's why Jesus turned the water to wine. He wanted to show people who he was.
The next time you go to a wedding reception remember what Jesus did at a wedding in Cana. He provided a miracle so that people would know who he was.
