Not foolish at all!
Children's sermon
Object:
a TV Guide
Good morning! How many of you watch television? (Let them
answer.) Yes, I guess everybody does watch television. We
probably all watch it way too much, but let me ask you this. How
do you know what's going to be on the television? (Let them
answer.) Most of us use one of these (show the TV Guide) or maybe
we look in the paper to see a guide there. If I look at what's on
television in this guide, I see (name several sitcoms that are
scheduled to be shown). You know something? These shows may be
funny in some ways, but for the most part, they are just
foolishness! I might even go as far as to say they are a total
waste of time. Nobody really acts the way these television
sitcoms show them acting, do they? (Let them answer.)
Let me tell you that there are a lot of people in this world
who think that what we believe is just as foolish as those silly
sitcoms. They think it is foolish to believe that God loved us so
much that He sent His one and only Son, Jesus, to die on the
cross for us. They think the whole story about Jesus dying on the
cross is just a silly story that we made up. What do you think we
should say to those people? (Let them answer.)
We could tell them that we know it is true because the Bible
tells us that it is true, but I suspect that those people think
the whole Bible is just foolishness, so that probably wouldn't
convince them. Maybe the best thing we can do for those people is
to pray for them, because God says that those people are going to
perish and be lost forever. The message of the cross is not
foolish at all. The message about the cross is the power of God
for all of us who believe.
Let's pray for those who don't believe.
Dear God in Heaven: Please send Your Holy Spirit to all those who
don't believe, so that they will be convinced that the message
about the cross is not foolishness, but a powerful true story
about Your love for us. Amen.
