Not ordinary, but special

an egg
Good morning, boys and girls. You've all seen an egg before. How many of you had some kind of eggs for breakfast? (wait for a show of hands) You probably had eggs either scrambled or fried. Do you know that there are dozens of ways to fix eggs? (let them answer) There are poached eggs and eggs on a biscuit and egg salad and deviled eggs and omelets. Have you heard of all of those? (let them answer) Most of you have. Some of you even like some of those kinds of eggs. Those ways to fix eggs are pretty ordinary. But there are some more ways that you probably haven't heard of. There are creamed eggs and pickled eggs, and egg croquettes, and egg souffle and egg foo yung and eggs a la king! Do any of you ever eat all those special kinds of eggs? (let them answer) I haven't eaten very many of those kinds of eggs. Then there are eggs Benedict, egg nog, custard, crepes, and even pizza eggs. There's even a recipe for a punch called Spitzzerinktum! That's a funny name, isn't it! Did you ever imagine that you could do all those things with an egg? (let them answer) My all-time favorite is a recipe where you put cake on the bottom and ice cream on top and then you beat up egg whites with a little sugar and spread it all over the top of the ice cream and cake, pop it in a very hot oven and when you take it out, it's called Baked Alaska. It's just delicious! And all those recipes are from an ordinary egg!
Our lesson today is about Jesus in his hometown. He had moved away for a long time. When he came back to visit, the people couldn't believe it was the same Jesus all grown up. They expected him to talk the same and act like the same ordinary person he used to be, like this ordinary egg. But Jesus read part of the Scriptures and explained it to them and they were very surprised. They thought he should say things like they were used to hearing. Instead he told them some very new special things that they weren't ready to hear. They wanted ordinary and he gave them special! So Jesus didn't stay in his hometown. He went to towns where people were tired of ordinary things and were excited when he told them special things about God. Those people were ready to hear the special stories about God's love that Jesus told.
