Not peace!
Children's sermon
Object:
A dove Christmas ornament
A big word used many times in our church is the word "peace."
I brought with me this morning a dove we put on our Christmas
tree every year. The dove is a symbol of peace. At Christmas, we
get many cards that speak of "peace." It is an important word
because peace is such an important concept. It is important that
people get along with each other and feel at peace inside.
Conflict, war and harsh disagreements are something we try to
prevent and resolve. Jesus is sometimes called the "Prince of
Peace."
One day he told his followers that following him might not bring peace -- it might bring the opposite. It might mean that people who are a close family might be divided because of their belief in Jesus.
Sometimes Christians are surprised that Jesus said that people would actually fight with one another because of Jesus -- the "Prince of Peace." I'm wondering, why would Jesus say this? Do you have any ideas? (Let them answer.)
Perhaps it is because Jesus is so important that he's like a valuable piece of treasure. People might fight for that, wouldn't they? So, sometimes people fight for Jesus because he's so important to them.
I'm glad Jesus is important to you.
