Not peace!
Children's Activity
Object:
Teachers or Parents: Children have no problems with fighting
and disagreements. If they have a particular toy that is
important to them, they will fight for it. They can perhaps
understand why Jesus might say that people would fight because of
him: he's that important!
This lesson fits in well with last Sunday's gospel theme about priorities. Jesus is the most important element of our lives as Christians. This might explain to the children why people might disagree with one another because of Jesus.
Disagreement is important because it happens throughout life. Too often children eventually learn that "Christians don't fight." The result is that Christians still fight and disagree -- they just don't do a good, respectful job of it. You might be in a wonderful position to teach children to disagree (fight) with respect for others and themselves. There is nothing wrong with conflict, but there is something very wrong with hate and lack of respect for others.
Peace means much more than the absence of conflict. It also means the best that God has to offer. Jesus is the best and Jesus is that peace.
