Not so foolish!
Children's sermon
Object:
an old wallet with a $100 bill hidden inside
Good morning! I want you to look at this old wallet. It's
beat up and I doubt that anyone would think twice about throwing
it away. If we had a garage sale and put this on the table for
sale for five dollars, do you think anyone would buy it? (Let
them answer.) Yes, you're probably right. I doubt that anyone
would pay five dollars for this raggedy old billfold. If they
did, we would think they were foolish, wouldn't we? (Let them
answer.)
Let me show you something. The fact is that paying five
dollars for this old wallet would actually be a good deal. Let me
show you why. Open the wallet and show the $100 bill. Now, do you
still think it would be foolish to pay five dollars for it? (Let
them answer.)
In a lot of ways the good news about Jesus is like that. We
tell people how Jesus died to pay for their sins and that they
can go to Heaven if they just believe that, and it seems like
foolishness to them. They just can't believe that God has done
all that was needed for them to go to Heaven. Like the people who
think it is foolish to buy this old wallet, they think it is
foolish to believe in Jesus. But, you and I know better, don't
we? We know that Jesus did pay for all our sins when he died on
the cross. We know that we will go to Heaven because we believe
in him, don't we? (Let them answer.) Yes, we surely do. What is
foolishness to them is the best news possible for us. Let's thank
God for making us believers.
Dear Father in Heaven: We thank You so much for giving us faith
so that we can believe in Jesus. We know that he is the truth and
not foolishness. Amen.
