I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. (v.
12)
Good morning, boys and girls. Today we are going to talk about the things Jesus could not tell us before he went back to heaven. Jesus told us a lot about how God made us, loved us, forgave us, and gave us to Jesus, his Son who taught us, then died for us and was brought back to life. There were some things that Jesus said we were not ready for, and would be delivered later to us by the Holy Spirit. I have asked myself why he didn't tell us more.
Today, I think I know the answer and I want to share it with you. Is there anyone here that would like to get married? (let them answer) I brought along a wedding ring and I thought if two of you wanted to get married we could have the wedding this morning. Are there others that think they will get married later when they are older? (let them answer) We can probably say that you are not ready to be married at your age.
I looked at the ads in the paper this morning. There are some really good jobs for the right people. Is there anyone here that thinks they could be a mechanic at the garage? They need someone to fix cars. The pay is good; you get vacations. The only thing you need is to be able to take an engine apart and put it back together so that it runs better. Anyone want the job? (let them answer) Maybe you are just not ready for it now but in a few years it may be just the job for one of you.
Let's try one more. I need someone to run an errand for me and I need it done right after church. You will have to drive my car to the other side of town, deliver a package, and drive back to the church. I will be talking to some people while you are gone but I want to be home for dinner around 12:45. Is there anyone here who drives a car? (let them answer) No, but it won't be too long before you are sixteen years old and driving a car. You are just not ready yet.
This is the same answer that Jesus gave to us before he returned to heaven. He said he had a lot more to share with us but we are not always ready for his message. For that reason, Jesus said, his Father was going to send us the Holy Spirit who will be telling us exactly what God the Father wanted us to hear. Jesus said we would be ready. Today we keep learning more about God. The Holy Spirit is with us all of the time, sharing the things that God has always wanted us to know. This means that God is not very far from us. When God knows we are ready, he will tell us exactly what he wants us to know and do.
You don't have to get married today, you don't need to find a job today, and you are not quite ready to drive a car but it will be happening soon and when the time comes I promise you that you will be ready. Amen.
